Is 2D ultrasound accurate enough to determine baby’s gender?
I had one at 19 weeks and was told I was having a baby girl. The baby was not cooperating very well and it took quite a while to made the decision. But I’d clearly seen something bigger enough than a girl’s thing and thought is was a boy right before the determination. One of the staff told me the accuracy was nearly 100% at 19 weeks but I’m still confused……

statistically , with today’s ultrasound machines , there is hadly any difference in the acuracy of gender . Accuracy for 2D is 97% with rpoper positioning , and 3D/4D is 99% , beause all 3D and 4D is is surface rendering . People have the mistaken impression that 3D and 4D is better ultrasound , or more advanced machines. It’s the same machine , Just a different program for processing the soundwaves once they are recieved by the machine… it bascally elimates all but the surface echoes , and the machine then produces a topographic map of the supericfial structures….essentially , It’s a really cool toy; and very much worth the money if you wnat to see pretty pictures and have that bonding experience. The difference between 3D and 4D is that the 4D can recognize fetal motion and compensate for it in real time , and not produce an image with 6 noses should the baby turn it’s head :-) I use 3D/4D daily , and it’s a great thing to see parents light up when they see the baby , but we ,as techs and your doctor ,would be flying blind without 2D, and that will never change . I love 3D , but it has it’s time and place.
If you want to pay the money for a 3D scan …do it ! It’s so much fun ,and in adition to getting 2% higher accuracy for gender , you will get some great pics . Just know that 3D and 4D isnt ” needed”….it’s just a really cool bonus.
